Have been on a research binge and have uncovered some startling information ... we all know about how broccoli is the anti cancer vegie, yesterday I read that it also has the ability to counteract several bad palyers that are in pollution filled air ... anyway, it showed that the broccoli consumed as sprouts actually flushed the body of benzene which is a really bad component in heavily polluted air ... Then I went back to original research that started it all and then came forward and it seems that conventional wisdom is that you must consume broccoli raw or you lose the properties ... I saw newer research that shows that it is actually an enzyme that breaks the component in broccoli into the cancer fighter and cleanser ... that enzyme is deactivated by the heat ... the same enzyme is high in daikon and adding daikon to the cooked broccoli brought the properties back ... So have been thinking and it appears that by combining a little daikon or sango radish with broccoli can create a super microgreen mix ... another colleague told me that he has been growing daikon in his broccoli and it makes a good mix so I am going to be trying it out (see pic of Daikon above) ... once I find right combo this is going to be our new superfood supplement microgreen mix ... Do you remember when there was a patent granted on broccoli sprouts because of the anti-cancer nature of some of it's constituent elements. "In September 1997, Johns Hopkins researchers published studies that showed the sprouts of some kinds of cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli and cauliflower, have high levels of cancer-fighting compounds. Later they filed for patents, describing the process of growing and harvesting sprouts "to form a food product." These patents have subsequently been struck down but the science behind the cancer-fighting compounds has been proven again and again. New research has just been published that shows another significant effect of the consumption of the compounds and this one has to do with fighting the effects of air pollution. Researchers studied the effects of a cocktail made with broccoli sprouts in a highly polluted area in China. Their conclusion was that there was a significant effect on the retention of dangerous benzene in the test subjects. More research is obviously needed, but what a wonder the tiny broccoli plant remains. We will leave it to the trained researchers to determine the many things that would go into helping the health of people endangered by pollution, but does it not make sense that an easy addition to our diets could have a significant effect on our health... Inspired by this research and in keeping with our mission, we will unveil a new family kit to grow broccoli microgreens on a continual basis so daily ingestion of fresh microgreens can be available to you right in your own home ... stay tuned for the rollout information.
