Tomorrow is harvest day for our radish mix and sango radish microgreens. I am totally in awe of the beauty of the sango radish leaves ... these are 6 days old and are really tall and defined with vibrant and deep coloring (probably indicative of the nutrition in these wonderful microgreens). These microgreens were in our growing media that contains a base of coir with worm castings and trace minerals. We are going to undertake some testing to try and isolate the supplement that has caused this explosive growth. The crop is at least twice as tall and the leaves and stems are extremely robust both in color and size. Just incredible results ...
Our latest crop was comprised of radish mix and a tray of sango radish ... these photos were taken today at 5 days of growth. The colors and textures are incredible ... our kit is yielding better and better results ... take a look at the proof !!!
In a recent New York Times Article regarding the use of supplements and vitamins and how it has become pervasive in our modern society, the author shows how Vitamins and supplements have been used as the quick fix for what ails you and the savior of your health and wellness by slick marketing and campaigns driven by what is now a multi-billion dollar industry. Society has embraced the idea that a pill can wonderfully reverse basic ills and habits that we have obtained through years of neglect and attention to what powers our very beings ... we eat our potatoes french fried at our local fast food outlet. It used to be a once in while treat for us, it has now become the primary source to our unhealthy lifestyles and national wellness. You are not going to change decades of habit, but you can start by doing what got us here in the first place ... make the whole raw foods and meals a treat to be savored like fast food used to be and allow healthy nutrition back into our lives and start to reverse this modern dilemma of empty calories and food devoid of nutrition (have you noticed how many new products are advertising added nutritional content ... what happened to the original nutrition). Things will not change overnight, but things MUST change ... there are too many things now creeping up into our healthcare and wellness epidemics to dismiss. So here is a start .. instead of reaching for your daily supplements ... reach for your daily microgeens !!! Some blue curled Kale grown in our Microgreen Kit ...
Now this is what a FULL tray should look like .. Blue Curled Kale microgreens that are just great looking and even better tasting ... our new coir with worm castings is the secret. The difference is more than amazing ... the Kale grew out in 9 days and the tray was FULL ...
Today is going to be a harvest day for three more trays of greens (another entry to follow at harvest) so we decided to use remaining Crimson Tide Mustard and Blue Curled Kale that we harvested earlier this week. Here is a photo on this incredible lunch. The broth was made with the leftover bones, etc from fresh fish that was given to us. We cooked it up to create a savory broth to which we added miso to make a miso soup. We took some fresh noodles and added to it some thai basil and green onions from our garden and topped it off with the microgreens. The flavor mix was out of this world ... the thai basil combined with fresh green onion and the tangy (wasabi like) taste of the microgreens was more than great ... it was, as they say in the islands ONOLICIOUS !!!
This weekend I was treated to two spectacular culinary experiences. The first was at Nuka, a new sushi restaurant in Haiku, Maui and the second was a popup dining experience brought to Maui from Oahu held last night at Leoda's in Oluwalu ... the popup was done by Pig & The Lady of Oahu. What stuck out besides the elegant and TASTY dishes was the creative use of microgreens by Sushi Chef Hiro and Chef Andrew ... make sure you have something to catch your saliva as these photos will naturally make your mouth water !!!
This is a pic of the harvest day for our last seed packet in the Microgreen Starter Kit. This is a delicate oriental microgreen, tatsoi. This crop is characterized by a crisp taste and delicate stem and leaves. I decided to harvest a day sooner than normal as I wanted to replant with our "secret sauce" media. Normally this tasoi planting would have gone to 10 days but this shows growth and colors a day early ... The tatsoi seed hulls were more pronounced that the other seeds, even with careful harvesting. There were many seed hulls on the washing that needed to be skimmed. Not a problem unless you are doing this for resale. Full harvest container shows the delicate stems and vibrant green tops ...
Here are two shots of the final production that is being harvested today of two more crops from the Microgreen Starter Kit. Pictured on the left is Crimson Tide Mustard, click on the photo and take a close look at the secondary leaves that have sprouted in the last 2 days. Really wonderful looking colors and it is such a delicate looking miniature plant. The Blue Curled Kate on the right shows off the spectacular green of the leaves and the fullness of the growth. Both crops were planted 2 days ago in our commercial mix so we can contrast to the home kit. Will have pics next in 8 more days ....
Results were more than encouraging ... we got over 2 times the weight of microgreens using our secret (will be offering final formula soon) soil to grow microgreens. I have taken photos and compared with original crops from past weeks. We grew radish mix and broccoli again to compare and contrast ... Below are shots of the radish mix ... Broccoli ... Compare this to earlier harvest, but we harvested almost 3 times the weight and volume along with the taking only 7 days vs 11 on the first crop. The microgreens were taller, fuller, more flavorful, and deeper colored. Comparison to Fresh Microgreens from Whole Foods Maui vs our kit grown .... The microgreens on the left are our fresh harvest of a mix of radish and broccoli vs on the right a sample of fresh microgreens purchased yesterday at Whole Foods Maui. Notice the length of the stems and colors. Our microgreens leaves were far larger than those from the fresh mix and in spite of some of the mix having secondary leaves. This is indicative of more days growing and maturing for the microgreens. I would say our home grown microgreens are at least the match for the store bought ... imho our kit greens are far superior !!! |
