Thai Basil
This picture of a crop of our Thai Basil microgreens is at about a week of growth.  These wonderful microgreens will stay at this stage for several weeks and provide and aromatic and visual reminder of the wonders of microgreen growing.  These micro thai basil plants have the smells and taste of the full plants and yet pack it all in a tiny "micro" sized body.  Indicative of many of our microgreens, these are a satisfying addition to any growers crop mix.  Kits of Thai Basil are available now in our store or on etsy.

We are starting to blend some of our seeds to create custom mixes for both spectacular looks and amazing taste.  Pictured here is our first mix which we call Makawao Zinger or Makazing Mix for short.  In honor of our humble production facility and wonder spicy taste of this wonderful radish mix.  Photo was taken of our first crop at just short of 7 days from seed.

Microgreens, Sprouts, Heirloom Vegetables ... Oh My !!!

This recent article on "Sprouts and Microgreens for a Nutritious Diet" highlights things we believe to be significant but documentation to back this up is scarce and wild claims are all over the internet.  We know how vibrant and alive our microgreens taste, how attenuated the flavors become and how they add wonderful flavors to our foods.  We also grow sprouts and try and consume locally produced vegetables.

In this article the studies are hypothesizing what we believe are benefits from growing and consuming these mini vegetables on a daily basis.  Our kits introduce you to methods and supplies so you can grow them yourself.  We believe that in the next few years, consumption of microgreens and sprouts will lead the way in fighting some of the ills modern societies are facing that are precipitated by nutrition or lack of it.

A final note in the article highlights another ill of our modern food supply system.  Modern agricultural practice dictates producing vegetables that look good, have long shelf life, and ship well.  Notice this does not include high nutrition, great taste and textures.  All the things we used to look forward to when consuming vegetables.  If you have ever tasted a locally grown heirloom tomato and compared to what  you get at the supermarket ... you know exactly what I mean ...

Classroom Microgreen Kit Launch ...

We are proud to offer for sale our first microgreen educational classroom kit.  The kit includes 20 plant based plastic reuseable container, broccoli seeds from organic and Non-GMO growers, sustainable coir based media with worm castings, 2 spray heads that fit on plastic water bottles (reuse rather than discard) and a teachers manual that has instructions for implementing the microgreen growing and ideas for integration into existing curricula.  In the near future we are setting up an idea exchange for classrooms using out kits.  Information exchange and experiments are the goal of creating a network of users.

Here are a few photos from a Head Start program in Hawaii.  This program is for 3 and 4 year olds ... take a look at the wonderment in their faces ... they eagerly devoured this first crop of broccoli, can you believe it, broccoli !!!
We have created a website devoted to innovative technologies that are suitable for classrooms.  These technologies like aquaponics could unlock the imagination and exploration that may someday translate to the next breakthrough in agriculture.  Give the children the opportunity to explore and interact with plants and watch the GROW !!!

The website page that highlights our microgreen kit is full of more photos of this activity ... the website can be found at Urbaform Educational Technologies
